Arkham Asylum is a psychiatric institution located in Gotham City.

History[]

Before his arrival in Gotham City, the criminals who would later come to face the Batman would be sent to Gotham Penitentiary. This was changed when district attorney Harvey Dent argued that the criminally insane of Gotham needed help and treatment instead of punishment. This led to Arkham Asylum becoming the main prison of the city, inhabiting supervillains such as the Joker, Calendar Man, Penguin, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, Killer Moth, Mad Hatter, and Scarecrow and Poison Ivy. During The Long Halloween, Batman and GCPD captain James Gordon paid Julian Day, the Calendar Man, a visit in the Asylum, due to his pattern of killing being used by a new serial killer named Holiday. While he did not directly tell them who it was, he did give them a hint, which led Batman to the Joker's cell. Discovering that he had escaped long ago, he left and tried to track him down. Several months later, the Scarecrow was helped by mobster Sofia Falcone to escape the facility and, after a short-lived fight against Batman, was successful in doing so along with the another inmate, the Mad Hatter. They, like a Poison Ivy before them, worked for the Falcones for a while until they were eventually captured by the caped crusader. Then, on Halloween, the former district attorney turned criminal Harvey Dent, now under the alias of Two-Face, together with his zombified friend Solomon Grundy, broke all the major supervillains held captive in Arkham out, except for the Calendar Man, in order to take revenge against Carmine Falcone, the mob boss of Gotham, who had caused his life’s downfall. Though successful, each of them were beaten and imprisoned again by Batman and his new ally, the Catwoman.
