The Batcave is the secret headquarters of Batman and Robin, hidden under Stately Wayne Manor. It is used to discretely hide their equipment, including their costumes, weapons, Batcomputer and Batmobile. Only their faithful butler Alfred was allowed freely into the cave.
History[]
The primary passage to the Batcave was located in Bruce Wayne's study behind a bookshelf which retracted into the wall upon the activation of a switch hidden under the hinged head of a bust of William Shakespeare found on a nearby table. Behind the bookshelf were the Batpoles, two fireman's poles down which Bruce and Dick would slide into the Batcave.
An unseen mechanism activated by an Instant Costume Change switch mid-shaft changed Bruce and Dick's civilian clothes to their Batman and Robin costumes on the way down.
The bottoms of the Batpoles featured a Compressed Steam Batpole Lift which propelled the bottom platforms back up the poles enabling Batman and Robin to slide back up to the library, their costumes being changed back into civilian clothes on the way.
The secondary passage between Wayne Manor and the Batcave was a secret Batcave elevator generally used by Alfred.
The Batcave consists of a large, well-lit cave that has been converted into a workspace. Several structures and various high-tech computer systems spread around the cave. The middle of the cave features a large rotating space where the Batmobile is parked. Numerous items of memorabilia are found in the cave.
The entrance to the Batcave is located precisely 14 miles from Gotham City.

Trivia[]
- Alfred cleans the Batcave every Wednesday night.
- Though many others, including Commissioner Gordon and Batgirl have seen the Batcave, they have never discovered it's whereabouts. This is mostly due to Batman and Robin spraying these people with Bat-Sleep and Bat-Awake in between trips to and from it's location. Though it's secrecy has had it's risks:
- Molly, Riddler's moll (disguised as Robin) was taken to the Batcave. Though Batman saw through her disguise, it isn't shown that she was sprayed with Bat-Sleep (possibly to avoid suspicion), making her capable of revealing it's location, if she got captured (unless he used Batnesia gas which isn't seen until the episode I'll Be a Mummy's Uncle). However she tragically died after falling into the Atomic Pile.
- The Joker nearly discovered the Batcave's location twice. The first time was when he and the Penguin hid in the the trunk of the Batmobile whilst being driven to it's location, but they didn't open the trunk to look out to see where they were during the journey and Batman had also had the Emergency Bat trunk lock on during the entire trip as a safety precaution. The second time was at Wayne Manor, when he accidently found the Batpole Switch in Bruce Wayne's study and mistook the hidden Batcave entrance for a secret passage, but thanks to the quick thinking of Alfred using the Emergency Batpole Elevator, Joker didn't make it.
- Commissioner Gordon, under the control of the Siren had hidden in the trunk of the Batmobile and discovered it's location. Fortunately Alfred found him and sprayed him with some Bat-Sleep to erase his memory of what he learned whilst under Siren's control.
- King Tut actually found the Batcave whilst tunneling under Wayne Manor. Though Batman and Robin managed to subdue his moll and Tutlings and spray them with Batnesia Gas, they didn't have enough to use on Tut and he ran away down the mine shaft to expose the Dynamic Duo to Commissioner Gordon, Chief O'Hara and Batgirl on the other side. Fortunately the roof of the shaft collapsed on top of him, due to the vibration of his loud voice, making him change back to his normal self with no memory of what he had learned.
