Dirk Dagner, gangleader, is released due to lack of evidence on robbery charges---and remains the only man in Gotham City who isn't celebrating Christmas.
When he gets wind of Batman and Robin's plans to cheer up the loneliest men in the city, he notices they are all perfect robbery targets besides and determines to ruin Christmas for all concerned.
Ben Botts, the elderly doorman at a posh night club, is for once invited inside to join t he customers he opens doors for---that means Dagner and his men can enter unopposed. A robbery attempt is foiled, thanks to Botts braining Dagner with a roast turkey.
The next stop is famous comedian Link Chesney, who is far grumpier than his public image suggests. He keeps a joke file worth hundreds of thousands of dollars---which Dagner and his gang help themselves to---after leaving Batman and Robin in an involved deathtrap where they will die as soon as Chesney stops standing on tiptoe.
They escape from this deathtrap and race to the next name on the list---a lonely lighthouse keeper who isn't happy that Dagner plans to sabotage
the lighthouse and wreck a war materials ship. Dagner will t hen steal the cargo and sell it on the black market. Batman and Robin foil this plan by seconds.
The crime-fighters determine that "the Loneliest Man in Gotham" is Dagner himself, who is only "a wild beast to be kept caged, with no friends"
