"The Origin of Killer Moth!"[]

An un-named inmate in Gotham Penitentiary seems to take a great interest in every facet of Batman's life that he can research. Upon his release, he has enough money hidden away to buy a fully furnished mansion and hire workmen to dig a cave headquarters underneath it.

But when the cave is finished, the convict murders the work crew in cold blood("Here's your pay. In lead!") and dons the shirtless costume of Killer Moth;self-appointed protector of the underworld. And he can pose daytimes as Cameron Van Cleer, society man on several boards of directors of prominent charities.

The idea is that criminals who are cornered can call Moth with a special signal; much as the police can signal Batman. Moth even has a "Mothmobile" that discharges powerful anesthetic from the exhaust---a method he uses to capture Robin and place him in a deathtrap where same as a moth; he will be drawn slowly closer to a raging fire until he is killed by it. Moth demands Batman take him to the Batcave and Batman must agree. But Robin escapes on his own once they are out of sight, and radios Batman he is okay. The Batmobile screeches to a halt and Moth and Batman pursue each other on the highest points of a suspension bridge.

Moth tries greasing the cables to trap Batman, but falls victim to his own trap and plunges into the waters below---his fate unknown for the moment.
