The Batsuit was a protective armor employed by Batman to patrol Gotham City and intimidate the criminals. The suit was also modified to house various equipment needed in his operations, including weapons and gadgets.

History[]

The Batsuit was presumably first developed during Batman's original days fighting crime in Gotham. Whilst the cowl consisted of a leather headpiece, the torso consisted entirely of bulletproof plates to protect vital organs from gunshots and minimize damage from other attacks. A collar also protected Batman's neck. It's unclear how much protection surrounded the lower body, though the boots were reinforced enough to make Batman's footsteps noticeable and intimidate enemies. Despite these, the Batsuit still allowed Batman to move quickly and dynamically, even during combat.

Features[]

Wrist-Mounted Equipment[]

Batman had multiple weapons and equipment attached to his gauntlets, including two bladed fins to block attacks and bo-shuriken to use as ranged weapons. Two collapsible grapnel guns were fixed on the inner wrists on the gauntlets and could be deployed via a spring-loaded system. A taser was also built into the right index finger to incapacitate foes quickly.

Tactical Knife[]

The Batsuit's symbol doubled as a tactical blade to cut through objects, including tape and thick cables. Batman could eject and reattach it, though the means behind its attachment were unknown. The blades also acted as protection against gunshots towards Batman's chest, though its unclear how durable they were compared to the rest of his armor.

Wingsuit[]

By tugging multiple cords, the Batsuit's cape would transform into a wingsuit glider with multiple fastenings. Using it, Batman could traverse the skies of Gotham and glide moderate distances. To ensure safe landings, the suit would eject the bodysuit and deploy a parachute to slow Batman's gliding velocity.

Utility Belt[]

Batman carried a black utility belt around his waist to store many of his gadgets and equipment used in fight crime. These ranged from weapons to use in combat, crime scene investigation equipment, and other gadgets to aid in his activities. Among its contents included handcuffs, torches, medical kits and explosives. The belt was also fitted with a rappelling line separate from the grapple guns, which Batman used to descend from areas quickly.

Trivia[]

  • Several sources have noted aesthetic similarities with the mk III Batsuit from Batman: The Enemy Within.
  • The Batsuit's wingsuit was likely inspired by the Webbed Wings that appeared in Batman #31.
  • Robert Pattinson would describe the process of getting into character when in the Batsuit in a behind the scenes interview. “You instantly feel this great level of power when putting on the suit. But I gained an even greater level of respect for the actors who came before me in this role, because I learned just how hard it was to project an emotional performance with that mask.”
