Carl Newman is an English dancer who served as Michael Keaton's "movement double" in Batman. Newman received a separate credit from the other in-batsuit stuntmen, whereas Sean McCabe and Dave Lea were lumped into a large category, even though they often performed many similar actions. Newman is also the only double to have his portrait taken by Herb Ritts.
Bat-History
Newman was a professional dancer, working freelance in all facets of media. Newman worked closely with Batsuit Wrangler William Todd-Jones in learning how to move more elegantly in the costume during pre-production. A montage of Newman assembling the Batsuit components onto himself was shown in Batman: The Making of a Hero. Newman took the seven Joker Goons (George Lane Cooper, Carl Chase, Mac McDonald, Terence Plummer, Phil Tan and Richard Strange) into a mirrored studio for mime training for their Ricorso Assassination scene.
After principal photography wrapped Newman did photoshoots on the standing sets at Pinewood to promote the movie. David Gamble photograghed Newman for LIFE magazine, posing him with Bob Ringwood and Anton Furst. Newman appeared in other magazines such as Time Out and Bravo.
