"Untold Tales of the Bat-Signal"[]
Reporter DAVE PURDY of the Gotham Gazette is given a new wrinkle on a story about Batman and Robin---the history of the Bat-Signal. AND to see if the Signal ever saved a life WITHOUT human assistance.
Purdy hears several interesting stories from Commissioner Gordon and Vicki Vale;the leading one being how Big Red and his mob once stole the Bat-Signal itself to short-circuit communications. Vicki Vale was kidnapped as the traditional witness who knew too much. With the sun blazing. Vale managed to use the Bat-Signal's glass to flash a gigantic SOS Morse Code that could be seen back in the city.
Purdy ends up writing his own scoop when escaped killer Tiger Bishop invades the lobby of the GAZETTE and wounds Batman with a gunshot.He and Purdy take shelter behind the Bat-Signal(there as a temporary exhibit) and Purdy turns on the signal, blinding the killer. Purdy himself lands the knockout punch.
When the excitement has died down,Batman whispers to Robin that he had to rewire the Signal to working order behind Purdy's back---but he decides not to tell.
