Eivol Ekdal was a strange Albanian genius who appears in Batman. He was an associate of Zelda the Great, and provides her with gadgets and gizmos from his secret workshop.

Biography[]

Eivol's secret workshop was hidden in the back of The Gnome Bookstore. He forced a stage magician, Zelda the Great, to rob banks on each day of April 1st.

When Batman plants a phoney story about the money Zelda stole being counterfeit, Eivol at first refuses to show Zelda the ultimate escape device, but relents. He invented an escape proof cabinet made of bulletproof jet-age plastic with a violently electrified grille that produces a poisonous coloured gas to cover Zelda's escape. When Zelda asks Eivol how she will escape, he tells her he won't tell her until he gets his $100,000. He explains that he invented the cabinet to trap Batman and Robin. As Zelda wonders how will she get $100,000, Eivol shows her a newspaper article reporting that the Star of Sammarkand, a rare emerald, will be displayed. It is a tempting target, and Zelda realised the emerald could be a "Batman trap".

After learning that the Star of Sammarkand was a fake and was a "Batman trap", Zelda kidnaps Aunt Harriet and suspends her over a vat of flaming oil and demands a ransom of $100,000 to be delivered in one hour only. However, Bruce Wayne, Robin and Commissioner Gordon reveals the story of the counterfeit money was untrue, and the money she stole was real. After pleading with Zelda to release Aunt Harriet, she agrees and frees her. While Zelda was helping Aunt Harriet into the special taxi, she planted a book of matches in her pocket to lure Batman and Robin to the Gnome Bookstore.

After Eivol realises the $100,000 was real after all, he reveals to Zelda that there is no escape from his "Doom trap". He also hired two gangsters to shoot Batman and Robin when they escape the trap, and tells them to hide in two mummy cases.

When Batman and Robin arrive at the bookstore and walk into Eivol's workshop, they found the inescapable doom trap open with a plastic bat inside it. But when they approach, Eivol activates the door and traps the Dynamic Duo inside. He tells them their tools from their utility belts are useless against his jet-age plastic, and fills the trap with the poisonous gas. Taking off their belts, Batman and Robin short out the electrified grille with their belt buckles, which blows open the door. As the Dynamic Duo escape, Zelda warns them about the gangsters hiding in the mummy cases, and when the gangsters open fire, Batman and Robin duck as the gangsters kill each other in the crossfire.

Eivol tries to escape, but Batman knocks him out with a Batarang.
