A large bat once flew in through an open window at Bruce Wayne's study at Wayne Manor. It appeared when he was trying to think of a disguise that might strike terror in the hearts of superstitious criminals. Bruce thought of this event as an omen and created a Bat-themed uniform.
Originally the bat merely flew through an open window, it is now depicted as smashing through the glass and Bruce has flashbacks to it regularly. In modern retellings the Window Bat is sometimes combined with the Monarch Bat and given glowing yellow eyes.
