A Foefie Gauntlet was used by Batman to rescue Vicki Vale during an incident at the Flugelheim Museum.

History[]

Incident at the Flugelheim[]

When Batman burst through the skylight of the Flugelheim Museum, he had the gauntlet attached on his arm. After grabbing Vale, he held it up to the Joker's face briefly before firing its two wires. The pair quickly rode on the gauntlet to the museum's doors, after which Batman detached and tossed a smoke bomb through the door to disorient the Joker's Goons. It seems that the gauntlet was abandoned at the museum once the pair reached the doors of the building.

Successor[]

At some point after Joker's defeat, Batman created a smaller version called the zip-line grapple. Unlike the gauntlet, it could be stored on the Utility Belt and apparently reused on multiple occasions.

Behind the Scenes[]

The Gauntlet's conceptual drawings and blueprints were created by Julian Caldow. Prop supervisor John Evans oversaw the construction of the device. Michael Keaton activated the hero prop in a closeup shot and posed with it during the Herb Ritts publicity shoot. Sean McCabe doubled for Batman during the wide shot of the foefie slide. In publicity material, the gadget was referred as "Steel Gauntlet" or even just Gauntlet.

Legacy[]

Both the Foefie Gauntlet and its successor, the Zip-Line Grapple, inspired the Line Launcher for the Batman: Arkham video games, a dual grapnel gun that allows Batman to cross over large gaps and hazards.
