James Craddock, alias, Gentleman Ghost, is a villain who appears in Batman: Caped Crusader.

History[]

James "Jim" Craddock was an English settler in the American colony of Gotham during the 18th century. He was a staunch believer in the hereditary status of the nobility and fiercely opposed the Americans' Revolution and split from the British Empire. In protest, Craddock became a highwayman who obstructed weapon caravans for the revolutionaries, while also stealing from the lower income classes of the population. After having terrorized Gotham for some time Jim was ultimately arrested and hung at the Gotham's gallows. James' restless spirit resurfaced in Gotham City of the 1950s, dubbed The Gentleman Ghost by the media. As a ghost, Craddock resorted yet again to only robbing from the lower and the middle classes as a protest towards democracy. Batman initially found it difficult to fight Craddock, does to the latter's intangibility. He is able to stop the ghost through the use of an exorcism ritual provided to him by occultist Linton Midnite. Gentleman Ghost tried to possess Alfred briefly while the ritual was in progress, but is ultimately trapped by Batman in a glass vial, also provided to him by Midnite. Linton Midnite takes the vial with his as compensation for having provided the banishment ritual, much to Craddock's dismay as he languishes inside the vial.

Trivia[]

  • This Gentleman Ghost was redesigned for the show, taking on the appearance of a shimmering, blue and translucent man wearing 18th century British attire and a featureless mask, save for the two eyeholes for his eyes. Instead of a cane that shoots fire projectiles, the character carries around a pair of ghostly flint-lock pistols. A small nod to his comic book design appears in the form of Linton Midnite wearing the same white tuxedo suit and top-hat as Craddock is trapped inside the vial.
