George Clooney is an American actor and director who portrayed Bruce Wayne/Batman in Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin. He would later reprise the role as a cameo in The Flash.
Behind the Scenes[]
George Clooney felt obligated to be different from Michael Keaton and Val Kilmer when it came to playing the characters of Bruce Wayne and Batman.
He would state in an interview, ”You have to remember, Michael came into this and he made it his own. Michael was Batman and he will always be Batman in the fans minds. Then Val did it and went for something else. He was a different kind of Batman. So I didn’t see many options in my case. My take on it was that he was a 35 year-old guy, had all the money in the world, drives the best cars, and goes out with the most beautiful women. I didn’t think by the fourth outing in the series, many were going to buy him as the ‘oh woe is me’ Bruce Wayne and Batman.”
Director Joel Schumacher shared a similar sentiment. “The studio did want a more family-friendly outing with the fourth film. In that scenario, I figured to have a less damaged and tortured Bruce Wayne. I really didn’t see the harm in it.”
Bob Kane felt, from an appearance standpoint, that George Clooney was the closest to the comic version of Bruce Wayne that he initially envisioned. Good looking, charming and suave.
Producer Peter McGregor-Scott was very complimentary of George Clooney’s work ethic. “When we shot the film, he was still working full-time on ER. He felt very obligated and loyal to that show and refused to take time off. He also didn’t want to short-change us. So he just did both full-time without argument. He worked seven days a week for months.”
