Map of the explorable areas of Gotham in Arkham Origins.

Batman: Arkham Origins took place in of its depiction of a portion of Gotham City. Set during Christmas Eve and 7 years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman, in his second year of crimefighting, was hunted by eight of the world's greatest assassins for a prize of $50,000,000. Batman encountered many of his well-known adversaries for the first time, including The Joker.

Gotham's environment in Arkham Origins was set 8 years before the events of Batman: Arkham City on Christmas Eve, and shared both similarities and drastic differences with Arkham City's environment. The explorable portion of the city in the game consisted of two islands: Old Gotham, a more older section of Gotham which eventually became Arkham City, and New Gotham, a larger, wealthier, and modern section of Gotham that was filled with corporation buildings and towering skyscrapers. The two islands were separated by Pioneers Bridge.

Old Gotham contained many of Arkham City's districts and buildings, including Park Row, the Industrial District, Amusement Mile which was not flooded, the Bowery, as well as Sheldon Park, an area in the center which eventually became the restricted section of Arkham City and Wonder Tower was located there. There were also some new locations included, such as the Gotham Merchants Bank in the Bowery, Dixon Docks, and The Penguin's ship, the Final Offer, at Amusement Mile, and also various GCR Towers that were located in each district of Gotham.

In New Gotham, there were three districts: the Diamond District, a majestic and wealthy part of Gotham that consisted of tall, well-lit buildings and was covered in Christmas Decorations. Notable buildings there included the Royal Hotel, Gotham City Cinema, the Gotham News Building, and the Gotham City Daily. The second district in New Gotham was Coventry, which was a more industrial section of Gotham. Notable buildings there include Lacey Towers, and the Cale-Anderson Building. The southern section of New Gotham had a more older-looking area, Burnley, which was filled mostly with smaller apartments, had accessible sewers that ran below it, and was the home of both the GCPD Building and Enigma's Headquarters.

Both islands also had an inaccessible wall. In Old Gotham, a long watershed-like structure bordered part of Sheldon Park and served as the headquarters to Gotham City Light and Power. A small part of that area's interior was accessible. In New Gotham, a wall that went along the west edge of Burnley and part of the south end of Coventry contained the Headquarters for Gotham Rail.

Far South of New Gotham was Blackgate Prison, which was accessible only during the Main Story. The beginning and end sequences took place there, and the prison included various corridors, an Execution Chamber, the Nexus, the Panopticon, the Prison Chapel, and a series of underground sewers.

During the events of the main game, Gotham was snowed in due to a severe blizzard, which ensured that all but the criminals and Batman prowled throughout. In addition, the weather report indicated that the snow accumulation was expected to exceed 400 inches.
