Two motorized Grapple Guns were used by the Batman in his war on crime. Attached to the Dark Knight's gauntlets, it was often deployed to navigate the rooftops and as a weapon in combat.
Functionality[]
The grapple gun was implemented within the Batsuit's gauntlets. Through a spring-loaded mechanism, it would be deployed into Batman's hand for quick access. When fired, the gun would deploy a grappling hook connected to a length of wire. Batman was able to either ascend the rope or pull object towards him using a motorized reel system kept in the gauntlet.
History[]
During his fight with members of the Falcone mob, Batman used the right grapple gun to subdue the Twins. After firing a hook into one of the brothers' leg, he pulled the cord, knocking them both down. When the Penguin made his presence known and defused the fight, Batman reset the gun in its original position.
Batman also used the right-hand grapple to descend into Mayor Mitchell's office. After his presence was discovered by Catwoman, Batman retracted the gun as he prepared to fight her.
Whilst escaping the GCPD Headquarters, Batman used the grapple to ascend a staircase to the rooftops. The reel allowed him to ascend quickly enough to outpace officers pursuing him.
Batman made multiple uses of the Grapple Guns during the night of his final confrontation with Riddler. He first used it to save Dt. Kenzie after Catwoman knocked him from the building, working with Lt. Gordon to pull him to safety. During the arrest of Carmine Falcone, Batman used the grapple to ascend an elevator shaft from the Iceberg Lounge to the Shoreline Lofts. After Falcone's assassination, he used the grapple to ascend to a window near Edward Nashton's apartment, hoping enter it before the criminal as he fled the scene.
Batman used the two grapnel launchers during the Battle at Gotham Square Garden, using them to latch onto two of Riddler's Followers. He then swung around the rafter he was stationed on, pulling them away and hanging them from the girder. Batman later replaced one of the missing lines during the battle, using it to swing to a loose cable so he could cut it with his Tactical Knife.
Behind the Scenes[]
The grapple gun's implementation into the Batsuit's wrist was inspired by the concealed pistol used in the film Taxi Driver. According to Robert Pattinson, it only worked perfectly on the first occasion he had to use it in the film.[1]
