Dr. Roderick Rose AKA Hellgrammite is a DC universe super-villain, previously active in Gotham City. He was originally an enemy of Batman and the Creeper but became much better known as a Superman Villain.
History[]
Earth One[]
Dr. Roderick Rose was a scientist who exposed himself to a process which spliced his DNA with that of an insect. He became a criminal and travelled to Gotham City where he was fought by Batman and the outlawed vigilante, "The Creeper". After a subway fight, the two defeated Hellgrammite using a fire-extinguisher and electrified subway rails, leading to him being arrested by the GCPD.
New Earth[]
Dr. Roderick Rose was a scientist who exposed himself to a process which spliced his DNA with that of an insect. He wound up moving to Metropolis where he was hired by Lex Luthor to fight Superman. He fought Superman on many occasions after this, becoming a regular inmate of Stryker's Island penitentiary and Slabside Penitentiary, prior to Slabside being shut down due to riots started by the Joker.
Hellgrammite would also travel the country and be an enemy to the Birds of Prey, Green Arrow, Robin and Black Canary. Like Killer Moth, Rose would also make a deal with the demon Neron to enter a more monstrous form and turn others into his larvae.
