John Alvin was a renowned painter and poster designer. Alvin created the iconic posters and logos for Batman Returns. Alvin was also asked to create a similar campaign for Batman Forever a few years later.
Batman works[]
Batman[]
Alvin created numerous designs for the original Warner Brothers Batman movie, using the photography of Murray Close as reference. The B.D. Fox ad agency commissioned him to do numerous conventional poster designs featuring character images, but they were not used for reasons unknown. Instead Bill Garland's metallic gold logo from the initial teaser was used again for the movie's final one-sheet.
Batman Returns[]
For the sequel Batman Returns posters he based the art on the photographs of Jack Pedota. This time the marketing campaign was expanded to include individual character posters.
Batman Forever[]
In the case of Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever, Alvin based the poster art on photographs taken by Herb Ritts. The wider variation of character posters was continued for the third film.
