Lydia Limpet was the incorrigible, ruthless and seductive female assistant of The Bookworm. She had a clear crush on her boss, despite his abusive behavior and violent rages against her.
History[]
Bookworm attempts to kill Batman and Robin and to steal priceless books from the Gotham City Library. Lydia plants a bomb in a book in the Batmobile, but the assassination attempt fails when the bomb is ejected from the car and blows up in the air. Lydia is caught (though posing as an innocent Bookworm victim) at one point by the dynamic duo and subject unconsciously in the Batcave to a lie detector test.
Later, having set a trap for the Bookworm, the tables are turned when Lydia manages to disable Robin with knockout gas hidden in a book. Robin is tied to a large bell in the Bookworm's death trap. Batman rescues Robin. However, later they are both trapped in a giant cookbook disguised as a radio-controlled double boiler, and the Bookworm and Lydia try to boil the Dynamic Duo to death. They also steal the Batmobile to use for their crime spree. The Gotham City Police, along with Gordon and Chief O'Hara, arrive to rescue Batman and Robin from the giant cookbook. After failing to break it open, the police used dynamite to blow the book open, which they successfully did.
The heroes escape, with the help of Alfred via Bat-Radio, and through a manhole under the book, and catch up with the Bookworm's gang as they prepare to use the Batmobile to break into the Gotham library. Lydia hides in a packing crate during the fight which follows, but after the dispatch of the rest of the gang, Robin yanks her out of the box and Lydia is arrested.
Bruce Wayne is asked by the Police to come up with solutions to help rehabilitate them. She and the others are summoned to Police Headquarters. The Commissioner is shocked and disappointed to see her reading a book called "The World's 100 Greatest Crimes", revealing that she still hasn't learnt her lesson, "You abandoned child, is there no hope for you?" The Commissioner's words make her hang her head and feel extremely sheepish. The book is then handed to Bruce as a souvenir. After Bookworm and Bruce exchange conversation on the quote of "They who may lose today, may win tomorrow", they are then sent to prison.
