The Monster Men are a group of individuals injected with Hugo Strange's Monster Serum. Created for his second encounter with Batman, Strange often uses them in his schemes. The Monster Men are often greatly enhanced in height and strength, though their intelligence is greatly diminished.
History[]
Earth Two (Golden Age[]
The goons who became the Monster Men were originally five inmates of an insane-asylum. They escaped the asylum alongside fellow inmate, Professor Hugo Strange. After this, he used a serum derived from plants to stimulate their growth and turn them into dim-witted giants who commit crimes for the professor. Batman used his bat-plane to fight the creatures, being forced to use lethal force against his better conscious.
Amongst the killings, he hanged one from the neck on the batplane until dead, and shot another off of a sky-scraper.

Prime Earth[]
In this continuity, Hugo Strange's monster serum was a virus-like creation which mutated those infected into giant body-horror monstrosities. Hugo released this on a portion of Gotham City, causing the area to be sealed off while Batman and Batwoman got involved. Their allies Clayface and Dr. Victoria October worked to collect samples of the monsters' DNA and formulate a cure.

Notes and trivia[]
- The death of the final monster man in Batman #1 is an allusion to the film King Kong (1933) where the titular gorilla was shot down by a plane while atop a building.
