Nora Fries was the terminally ill wife of Dr. Victor Fries, who later became the supervillain, Mr. Freeze.

Biography[]

Years before his transformation, Dr. Victor Fries met Nora. The two fell in love and married around the time Batman began operating in Gotham. However, Nora soon fell ill with an incurable and deadly disease. Struggling to find a cure, Victor placed her in a cutting edge cryostasis chamber, to give him more time to find one for her. However, his boss, Ferris Boyle, found out about what he planned and stole Nora, also causing Victor's transformation to Mr. Freeze. Nora would be kept by Boyle for some time before New Years Eve that year.

Cold, Cold, Heart[]

In order to rescue Nora, Victor, now a criminal called "Mr. Freeze", made an agreement with the new Gotham crime lord, Penguin to break into GothCorp and kidnapped Boyle to access the necessary security codes to her confinements. However, the attack gained Batman's attention and led to a between them as he attempted to retrieve her chamber. This led to a fight after the Dark Knight shut down the coolant supplies, damaging Nora's chambers. After defeating Freeze and subduing Boyle, Batman fixed Nora's chamber, saving her life.

Batman: Arkham City []

As part of his incarceration in the city, Victor Fries arranged for his wife Nora to be moved into the city for him to continue his research into finding a way to save her life. Hugo Strange arranged to have Nora kidnapped as leverage on Fries during his psychological evaluation. After Strange learned all he could, he had Nora transported to the Joker, who is near death and needed Fries' medical knowledge. The body was hidden in an abandoned Falcone warehouse with explicit instructions to Victor that she'll only be released should he develop a cure for the disease killing Joker; however, Victor soon realizes that there is no cure (more specifically, the cure breaks down in a short period of time).

Nora's cryogenic chamber is left in the possession of several of Joker's men, many of whom express interest in thawing and raping Nora, leaving her in a state of constant danger. Fries and Nora are reunited when Batman discovers her in the city and disables her guardians. Victor can be seen with Nora after he is informed of her location, and when visited by Batman he tells Fries to give up a life of crime for her.

In From the Cold[]

Nora made in appearance in Batman: Arkham Knight, but only if the Season of Infamy DLC pack was downloaded. The Arkham Knight and his militia attempted to convince Mr. Freeze to assist in taking down Batman, but he declined. In revenge and in the hopes of changing his mind, the Knight took away Nora from Freeze. Batman comes across a ship stuck in a huge glacier of ice. After defeating the milita and making his way inside, Batman sees Mr. Freeze standing in front of a damaged generator. Mr. Freeze tells Batman that if he delivers Batman to the Arkham Knight, Nora will be given back to him. Batman challenges him but Victor realizes that even if he hands Batman over, his chances of getting Nora back are zero. Mr. Freeze hands Batman a tracking device to find Nora. After arriving at a possible location and defeating the guards, Batman notices that the cryochamber isn't there and sees a tracking device inside of a crate filled with ice. Interrogating a guard, Batman finds out that she's on a rooftop somewhere in Otisburg. While heading to the destination, Batman informs Mr. Freeze about them finding the tracking device and promises to get Nora back. After locating Nora's cryochamber and taking out the guards, Batman wipes away condensation from the chamber and Nora wakes up. Releasing her from the chamber, Nora admits to being aware of everything that's happened since she's been frozen. After informing Mr. Freeze that Nora's awake, he pleads to bring her back immediately. Nora asks to speak to her husband. Batman uses a computer that was next to the chamber so she can finally speak to Victor. Although Victor says that he'll freeze Nora again, she begs him to stop and says she doesn't want to be saved anymore. When the computer shuts down, a huge blast of ice suddenly appears. Batman, having hacked into the milita's communications earlier in the game, is alerted that drones are being sent to Mr. Freeze's location. Batman places Nora in the back of the Batmobile and then drives back to the ship with the help of an ice trail that Mr. Freeze created. Batman warns Mr. Freeze that he's been located and that he needs to leave but Victor refuses. Alfred warns Batman that reinforcements have been sent. When they finally return to the ship, the militia had sent tanks and drones to kill Victor. During the battle, Batman tells Victor that he can take out the militia by detonating the generator but he refuses because he needs it to save Nora. Nora tells Victor that destroying the generator is what she wants. Eventually, Victor concedes, tells Nora that he loves her and detonates the generator taking out all of the militia tanks. After the battle, Nora goes up to Victor and he tells her that with the equipment destroyed, there's no way to save her but wants to try to find another way. Nora tells Victor that this isn't the man that he is. Nora refuses to stand by and watch Victor destroy himself. Mr. Freeze tells Nora that he doesn't want her to die and she tells him to let her live. As the ice breaks away, Mr. Freeze notes that they won't have much time together. Days at most. Nora tells Mr. Freeze that time never was on their side. Batman leaves and Alfred informs him that the ship is leaving Gotham. Asking if they should track them both, Batman says to let them be knowing that they'll never been seen again.
