Sonia Alcana is a former detective with the Gotham City Police Department and one of three women who shared the mantle of Batwoman in Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman. Her family’s shop was destroyed by Rupert Thorne after refusing to pay protection money, a traumatic event that led Sonia to pursue justice through both legal and vigilante means. Rescued by Batman during the fire, she kept a batarang as a symbol of her resolve.

After joining the GCPD and partnering with Harvey Bullock, Sonia realized the system alone couldn’t dismantle Gotham’s criminal networks. She collaborated with Kathy Duquesne and Rocky Ballantine to form a covert Batwoman trio, targeting arms operations run by Thorne and the Penguin. Sonia uncovered the location of their weapons factory and helped orchestrate its destruction, later aiding in a final confrontation aboard the S.S. Naiad.
Following the mission’s success, Sonia resigned from the police force, acknowledging that even Commissioner Gordon wouldn’t officially employ a vigilante. She expressed a desire to leave Gotham for a quieter life and used evidence provided by Batman to exonerate Rocky’s fiancé.
