Notes[]
- The issue's story title, The Dark Knight Returns, has often been used as the comic series' title in subsequent reprints. The series has often been referred to as this title.
- The story notably features the importance of Martha Wayne's pearl necklace, with prolonged imagery of it being damged in slow-motion with the pearls cattering about the bodies of the Waynes. This would become prominent in later retellings of Batman's origin in both comics and other media. Miller is also the first writer to identify the movie the Wayne family walks out of as The Mark of Zorro.
