Barry has already gained the powers of the Speed Force when the plot begins, with Lex Luthor having already acquired video footage of an individual in Central City that can move at the speed of light.

One night Bruce Wayne has a nightmare of a future where Superman has brought about the end of the world. He's awakened by the sight of the Flash from that future warning him that "Lois Lane is the key" and that he needs to find others like Barry.

Suicide Squad[]

The Flash apprehends Captain Boomerang when he tries to rob a bank in Central City. At some point Amanda Waller managed to gather Barry's personal information, which Bruce Wayne forces her to hand over.

Justice League[]

Bruce Wayne tracks down Barry Allen and offers him a place on his team of heroes. Barry takes his offer without hesitation. The Flash and the rest of the Justice League confront the New God Steppenwolf in the tunnels beneath Gotham City, they weren't able to defeat him, but they did rescue his hostages and force him to retreat.

The Justice League then set about resurrecting Superman, using the electrical currents that the Flash generates and a Motherbox for a conduit. Superman is brought back to life, but in his confusion he attacks the Justice League before flying back to Smallville and recollecting himself.

The Justice League track Steppenwolf down to his base of operations in a backwater Russian town and try to prevent him from using the three Motherboxes to cause the end of the world. The Flash runs around the perimeter generating electricity while Cyborg connects to the Motherboxes, but one of Steppenwolf's parademons is able to blindside the Flash and incapacitates him long enough to allow the Motherboxes to fully synchronize and cause a cataclysm that kills the other members of the Justice League. Tapping into the Speed Force, the Flash is able to survive the initial blast and realises he'll need to reverse time by going beyond the speed of light. The Flash runs faster than he's ever run before, undoing the cataclysm and reaching Cyborg right before the Motherboxes synchronized, preventing the end of the world.
