The Mutants were a group of violent criminals operating in the Dark Knight Universe's Gotham City. Having been in operations after Batman's retirement, the group often committed violent murders and crimes for their own amusement, even managing to outdo the Joker in notoriaty. The Mutants would become one of Batman's main targets when the Dark Knight returned, leading to their disbandment when he publicly defeated their leader.

History[]

Dark Knight Universe[]

The Mutants formed some time after Batman's retirement. Led by a man who proclaimed himself "the Mutant Leader", the gang were linked to many gruesome crimes in Gotham, including the murder of children. By the year of Batman's return, the Mutants had become a great threat to Gotham. They had also begun using military-grade weapons in their crimes, which they had access to through a corrupt general in the US Army. Reports of their attacks were one of the major inspirations for Bruce Wayne to return as Batman.

On his first night of operations, three Mutants attacked Carrie Kelley and her friend Michelle as they tried to cut through an arcade. As they made attempts to "slice and dice" the girls, Batman made an appearance and subdued the thugs.[1]

Despite Batman's return, the Mutants continued their attacks. One of them was killed by Commissioner Gordon during an attempted assassination. Batman also tracked down three responsible for kidnapping an infant, resulting in the death of at least one member of the group. Batman then proceeded to interrogate the only known survivor, learning of the Mutants' contact in the army (who committed suicide before Batman could confront him) and their base of operations at the dump. The Mutants also began to face new opposition through Kelley, who was now operating as the latest incarnation of Robin.

At a rally held by the Mutant Leader, the gang were confronted by both Batman and Robin, the former using a Riot Tank Batmobile to subdue most the group. After making his way to the Leader, Batman confronted him in open combat and was almost defeated, but was rescued by Kelley. An unspecified number of the Mutants' membership, including the Leader, were arrested after the fight. However, they still remained powerful, with the Mutant Leader murdering the Mayor when he was sent to negotiate with the gang.

Do dismantle and humiliate the group, Batman worked with Gordon to arrange for the Mutant Leader's escape and a public fight between him. Through Robin, he was able to get word out to the gang, leading them to witness the fight. Using his knowledge of the terrain and taking advantage of the Leader's overconfidence, Batman was able to defeat the Leader and publically cripple him, humiliating him to the Mutant members present.

After their leader's defeat, the Mutants splintered into smaller groups, such as the Sons of Batman[2], or join with other criminals like Bruno.[3] Some remnants of the Mutants were involved in riots created by an EMP set off by Superman, though were later subdued by Batman and the newly-allied Sons of Batman.[4]
