The Phantasm is a murderous vigilante and former love-interest of Batman. Once the romantic partner of Bruce Wayne, Andrea Beaumont became a murderous vigilante after her father's death at the hands of criminals. Under this alias, she became an enemy of both Batman and Catwoman.
History[]
DC Animated Universe[]
The Phantasm first appeared in the DC Animated Universe film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, serving as the title antagonist. The daughter of Carl and Victoria Beaumont, she lost her mother at an uncertain time. Unknown to Andrea, her father was also involved the Salvatore Valestra's mob. When Bruce Wayne returned to Gotham to begin his crusade, the two met by coincidence and began dating. Andrea's relationship with Bruce helped him heal for the first time since his parents' murder, to the point where he decided to abandon his crusade to be with her. After he proposed to her, Andrea learned of her father's mob connections and reluctantly agreed to leave the country with him, sending her ring back to Wayne. This act led Bruce to fall back into despair and become the vigilante Batman.
Some time after they fled, the Beaumonts' locations was given to the mob by their former accountant Arthur Reeves. Whilst returning home one day, Andrea watched a hitman leave their house and, upon entering, discovered her father had been murdered. Stricken with grief, she took to avenging her father upon the mob, adopting a identity based on the Grim Reaper. Calling herself the Phantasm, Andrea targeted Carl's former assocaites, drawing Batman's attention to her activities. Whilst targeting the final man, now Batman's mortal enemy the Joker, Andrea confronted them both at the Gotham's World Fair, during which she disappeared from his life. Rather than kill the Clown Prince of Crime, Andrea would decide to leave him be and left Gotham. However, she would have continued confrontations with Batman in the future.
Batman/Catwoman[]
The Phantasm transitioned to the comics in Tom King's Batman/Catwoman comic series, serving as one of the principle villains. This take also merged her into DC's Earth Prime.
