"Chapter 3: I Know Now What I Must Become"[]

Synopsis[]

Hoping to get the police involved, Edward hands in a recording of Joon's murder addressed to the police commissioner. He then returns to work and continues the investigations into Wayne Enterprises for Stone, who is looking for something suspicious about the company. Edward continues his investigations into New Beginnings, hoping the police will become involved. He soon learns that Joon's daughter, Ana, has been forced to take her father's place running the front. Edward also continues to be harassed by the shadowy man, leading him to worry for his life.

After several days, Edward realizes the police are not going to be involved. He soon makes contact with Ana via an online messaging service, though she quickly cuts contact after he asks about the GCPD's lack of involvement. Edward follows up on Waterfront Industries, tracing them to a disused warehouse in Gotham's docks. He learns it was a previously a front used by Maroni and witnesses a deal between Higgins and a member of the GCPD. Edward contacts Ana again, revealing he knows about the GCPD's corruption and that both she and her father are laundering money for Drops. Confirming his allegations by remaining quiet, she indicates that other lower income are working for someone, though refuses to indicate who.

Edward continues to investigate Maroni, learning that most of his assets were seized and made part of the Renewal Program. He quickly makes the assessment that it's likely the work of wealthy citizens, who are using criminals to hide their resources to hide their earning from the activities. To investigate their accounts further, Edward claims to Stone that he has discovered some anomalies with the Wayne accounts. He is able to convince him to gain access to the Wayne Enterprises accounts and learns that they are kept in at Gotham Mountain Security. Edward begins making contact on conspiracy theory message boards to investigate the company, eventually making contact with another user who works for the company. With his help, Edward breaks into the company's storage and begins investigating their accounts.

Over several months, Edward continues to investigate Wayne Enterprises and KTMJ accounts, though the investigations turn up no further information. He also speculates whether the "Nobody" helping him is actually Batman. One day at work, Edward discovers that KTMJ also represents the Renewal Project, leading him to realize he can investigate their accounts for Renewal. That night, he discovers they've been using political donations and funds from Renewal to launder dirty money for Gotham's politicians, including Mayor Mitchell, Commissioner Savage and DA Colson. Having been reliant on Renewal funds for his upbringing but had many of his applications rejected, Edward's mental health fractures.

As he leaves a message to Batman outside his apartment, Edward notices a bat-emblemed spotlight shining. He then realizes he should become something like the Batman to expose the conspiracy...

Notes[]

  • The issues' title comes from the entry said aloud by Gordon in The Batman. The entry itself also appears at the end of the issue's story.
  • One user on nigma.org claims that Thomas Wayne was cryogenically frozen, a reference to a popular conspiracy regarding Walt Disney. It also serves as a indirect mention of Mr. Freeze.
