The Untold Legend of the Batman is a three issue 1980 series written by Len Wein that expands on Batman's origin and explains where he acquires Batmobiles. Joe Chill's family is also touched on.

John Byrne chose this project as his first major work for DC, but decided to pull out after the first issue and return to Marvel. Inker Jim Aparo filled in on the two subsquent issues. Although not credited for writing, some of the concepts and story structure where Byrne's. José Luis García-López drew the covers, the third issue was chosen for the trade paperback collection.

In 1989 the series was adapted as a MPI Audio Edition, it was included as a mail order tie-in on Batman Cereal boxes.
