Dt. William Kenzie is a member of the Gotham City Police Department's narcotics division. Like most officers, he was under the employ of Carmine Falcone and involved his operations. Kenzie was also involved in the disappearance of Annika Kosolov, drawing the attention of both Batman and Catwoman.
Biography[]
William Kenzie was presumably associated with Falcone Crime Syndicate either before he joined the GCPD or entered their payroll due to systematic corruption in the department. Like other officers, he'd often turn a blind eye to their activities, though he became involved with the organization's activities and acted as a bouncer at the Shoreline Lofts. As part of the Narcotics division, Kenzie was involved in the case against Salvatore Maroni and the drug bust. He was also aware of Falcone's involvement as an informant in the case and his motivation to take over the Gotham Renewal Corporation. After the takeover of Maroni's drug operation, Kenzie became involved in the Drops trade, often accompanying Penguin on deals.
The Batman[]
Skirmish at the Iceberg Lounge[]
Kenzie first encountered the Batman during the skirmish at the Iceberg Lounge. After learning of the fight between him and other bouncers at the club, he confronted the vigilante as he beat up one of the men with a baseball bat. Aiming his gun, Kenzie demanded Batman surrender and threatened to shoot if he didn't comply. This resulted in Batman throwing the bat into his face, knocking him out and breaking his nose.
Murder of Annika Kosolov[]
After getting medical treatment for his injury, Kenzie accompanied Falcone to the apartment of Annika Kosolov, whom they'd been tipped off as an associate of the late Don Mitchell Jr.. Breaking into the apartment, Kenzie inadvertently scared her, prompting a scolding from the boss. He presumably watched Falcone's confrontation with Kosolov and witnessed him strangling her, leading to her death. After the murder, Kenzie took charge of cleaning up the scene, trashing the apartment and taking charge of her body. He also took the phone of her roommate Selina, which contained a recorded message of the attack.
Minor Encounters[]
The following night, Kenzie guarded the entrance to the 44 Below. During it, he was confronted by Selina, who'd obtained a card. Initially suspicious, Kenzie complied and let her into the club. Unknown to him, she wore contact lenses given to her by Batman, which identified him to the vigilante.
Kenzie later appeared among the other GCPD officers after Gil Colson's murder. Noticing they were crowded around an interrogation room, he was surprised to see Batman, who identified him as an informant to Lt. Gordon. Kenzie gave chase to Batman when the vigilante attacked Gordon and escaped the building.
Gunfight at Eastside Depot[]
Later that night, Kenzie accompanied Penguin and the Twins to a drug trade at the Eastside Depot. He carried several bags of cash, though also had Kosolov's body hidden amongst them. Whilst the Twins remained outside to guard the vehicles, Kenzie accompanied Penguin in the lab. During it, Catwoman made her bid to steal from his car and discovered Annika's corpse inside.
Kenzie arrived alongside Penguin, firing upon Batman as they excited. This incited a gunfight between them and Gordon, who'd accompanied the vigilante to the scene. After the vigilante fled to the Batmobile, a fleeing Penguin ordered Kenzie to protect their cash. Left behind by Cobb, Kenzie was soon attacked by Catwoman, who knocked him over with her motorcycle and stole one of the bags. Kenzie presumably went into hiding after the fight and disposed on Kosolov's body.
Catwoman's Hostage[]
Despite these, Kenzie was eventually tracked down by Catwoman and discovered her phone on his person. Discovering the recording, she took him hostage and held him on a skyscraper used by Batman whilst waiting for the vigilante's arrival. In the meantime, Kenzie was bound up by her bike chain and viciously beaten, during which she took possession of his gun.
When Batman and Gordon arrived, Kenzie begged with the latter to get Catwoman to stop. In response, Catwoman passed over the recording to the new arrivals, revealing his compliancy in Annika's murder. As Gordon accused him and the official of using Falcone to run Gotham's crime, Kenzie denied the allegation and revealed that the entire political structure was in the mobster's pocket. He went on to reveal Falcone's usage of the Gotham Renewal Corporation to run the city and how Falcone had organized the bust to gain more control of the company. Kenzie also stated that the upcoming election was likely to not have an impact, implying Bella Reál may fall into Falcone's pocket or be replaced by someone on his payroll.
With Catwoman angry from his involvement in Annika's murder, she attempted to execute Kenzie with his gun. However, Batman stopped her and tried to convince her to use non-lethal methods to stop both of them. To escape the encounter, the thief kicked Kenzie over the side of the building. The corrupt cop was saved by Batman, who fired a grappling hook into his leg and pulled him to safety with Gordon's help. Kenzie was presumably taken into custody after the incident and possibly charged with his involvement in Kosolov's murder.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Although based on a character from the Gotham Central comic series, Kenzie bares similarity with several other corrupt officers in the Gotham Police Department, including Arnold Flass.
- In the shooting script, Batman only learns of Kenzie's identity from Gordon during his escape from the Gotham Police Headquarters. In the final film, he is identified via the contact lenses worn by Selina and the information is passed over during the encounter.
