Zack Snyder's Justice League, also referred to as "The Snyder Cut", is the director's version of the Justice League film. The film was released on March 18, 2021 via Warner Bros' streaming service HBO Max.

Plot[]

While the premise is same as the 2017 theatrical version, the subtext and subplots are completely different and a restoration of Snyder's original version.

Cast[]

Production[]

Background[]

Zack Snyder agreed to direct Justice League as the third part of his five part story arc. He had Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and others returning their roles from his previous Snyderverse films with music done by Junkie XL and set for a November 2017 release.

Reshoots[]

Joss Whedon was tasked with completing the post-production process of the theatrical cut. Snyder's rough cut was not well liked by Whedon, the studio or financiers, understandably nervous considering the reception to BvS. The studio agreed that the film would need extensive re-shoots and newly written scenes. The director's guild chose not to give Whedon a co-directing credit, as his contribution was mostly alternative dialogue and some new reaction shots in existing scenes. Some large plot changes were made to make a two hour runtime possible. Some of the post-production touches included a new design for Steppinwolf, brighter color grading and Junkie XL was replaced with Danny Elfman as composer.

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut Movement[]

Due to how Snyder fans were unhappy with the final result, the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement trended for three years. Many Snyder fans donated to suicide prevention centers, others had harassed Joss Whedon and other people on the internet. Dozens of people involved with the film approved of the movement.

Revival[]

By Spring 2020, Zack Snyder confirmed that he is restoring his version of Justice League for HBO Max.

Release[]

The Snyder Cut was released as a 4 hour film on HBO Max by March 18th, 2021. It was originally going to be a 4-part miniseries alongside the film, but it became a film.
